This is my niece’s car, a base model, which I am driving for several weeks until we ferry it down to San Diego for her. I’m surprised by how much I like it. Unlike the amorphous 2nd-gen Prius, you can actually see out the back window and it’s overall much more like a traditional car and not some kind of blob.

I tried to test drive one before buying my Volt. It had an oversized review mirror that included the backup camera view.

I couldn’t find a seating position that was comfortable where that mirror didn’t block half the windshield.

I also tried to test drive a Scion iQ. In that car I couldn’t find a seat position where I didn’t feel like the car was shrinking around me.

It looks nice, never driven one but I don’t hate it, it came in fun colors too. They’re just more than I can justify  spending for a pure commuter that doesn't spark joy.

My issue with the C was that feels 50 % cheaper than the normal Prius, but only costs like 10 % less.

The C is not bad- you just have to accept/work around its inherent limitations. Th e wife as a ‘ 16 C one, I am currently driving a ‘ 18 C two. Acceleration is ... meh (stay away from the “Eco” button- that will sacrifice what acceleration the C has to the altar of the gods of higher MPG). Handling? with 15/5 low rolling resistance tyres- there is none. But it can be driven quickly with a little forethought .... I do like the 45 + MPG I am getting - especially with California gas prices right now ($3. 95/gallon my last fill up- and going higher with the new gas taxes coming along as of 7/1...) With our daily commutes the C makes sen se for us, but the wife does miss her old Miata.

I get it. I find the Prius surprisingly comfortable.

I don't know what she paid for it or what they cost. But I'm with you.

Normal Prius? I'll have to look at the model line-up.

Yours would be the subsequent generation then, wouldn't it? This car doesn't have the abominable Captain Kirk center console.

Base Prius C is $21.5k MSRP; regular Prius is $23.5k MSRP. Of course the regular one gets more expensive and has more options, but still they’re close in price. The interior of the C just feels unacceptably cheap to me (at least the last one I was in did; I’ll admit to not having been in one for a few years).

I bought a 2012 Versa because reasons like it needed an engine. So with engine and trans I spent around $3500 on it total. I am surprised by how much I like the car. But that’s less than $20k...

I'd be not disposed to buy a hybrid because complexity.

Yes, it has all of the”Nanny” electronics (lane departure warning, collision sensors , traction control, etc. The only ones I have turned on are the collision warning & traction control - the rest are turned off. The lane departure one is a bit of a joke, considering that it uses cameras to “see” the lane striping, and given the poor state of Ca. road striping.... and if the lanes have “Botts Dots” it can’t  see those at all.

But that Starship Enterprise console... Gak. What were they thinking? (I hope your car doesn’t have one of these and I have not just aff ronted you...)

Nothing like that at all- just the “normal” Prius C dash. There is a pod behind the mirror that has all of the “S afety Sense” electronics .
